Atlético Madrid’s summer business continues to gather momentum, with the club confirming the signing of experienced full-back Lucía Rodríguez while tying down several key players to long-term contracts ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 27-year-old defender joins on a deal until 2030 after completing a return to Madrid following two seasons with Real Sociedad. Rather than signalling a dramatic squad overhaul, Rodríguez’s arrival reflects Atlético’s approach this summer: strengthen key areas while maintaining the core of a squad that already has a strong foundation.

Lucía Rodríguez Adds Experience

Rodríguez arrives with extensive Liga F experience after spells with Madrid CFF, Real Sociedad, Real Madrid and Sevilla. She was a regular starter during her second spell at Real Sociedad, making 59 appearances across the last two seasons and starting 55 of those matches. Comfortable at right-back and experienced against the league’s strongest opposition, she gives Atlético another reliable option in defence.

After signing her contract, Rodríguez described joining Atlético as “a very important step” in her career.

Atlético Secure Their Future

While Rodríguez is the newest arrival, much of Atlético’s work has focused on ensuring the club’s future remains stable.

Club captain Lola Gallardo extended her contract until 2029, ensuring one of the most influential figures in Atlético’s history remains between the posts. With more than 260 appearances, the goalkeeper continues to be one of the club’s defining players.

Defender Alexia Fernández also committed her future until 2030 after establishing herself as one of club’s most consistent performers last season.

The club has also promoted two of its brightest academy graduates. Left-back Lydia Rodríguez and midfielder Natalia Peñalvo both signed new contracts until 2029 after making impressive breakthroughs into the first team during the 2025/26 campaign.

Versatile defender Rosa Otermín has likewise extended her stay until 2028, providing further continuity within the squad.

Building Rather Than Rebuilding

Not every piece of business has involved arrivals. Midfielder Júlia Bartel returned to Chelsea after her loan spell came to an end, while José Herrera departed as head coach following the conclusion of last season.

Even so, Atlético’s activity suggests a club focused less on wholesale changes and more on careful planning. Rather than replacing large sections of the squad, the emphasis has been on retaining proven performers, rewarding emerging academy talent and adding experienced players where needed.

Lucía Rodríguez fits that strategy perfectly. She strengthens a defence that already contains several long-term building blocks and arrives with the experience to contribute immediately.

With much of the squad now tied down to new contracts, Atlético Madrid appear to have laid the foundations for the next stage of their project before the new Liga F season has even begun.
