Canada lost to Germany after 120 minutes of exciting football. The match ended up in penalties. Lawrence and Leon’s both got stopped by Berger. Germany won by 2-4.
The Olympics women’s football started on Thursday the 25th of July with matches across all the groups. Canada faced New Zealand first. The last time they went head-to-head was in 2021 during two friendly matches. Canada won both games after Fleming, Sinclair, Prince and Leon scored the goals. The following players are selected by Bev Priestman. The head coach said it was very hard to pick only 18 players, especially in the forward line. In the meantime Bev Priestman has been replaced by her assistant after Canada Drone Gate. Some talented players did not make the cut such as Olivia Smith and Zadorsky is one of the alternates. Canada is defending their Olympic title this summer. The chances of Priestman and her team winning another gold medal are slim. World Champion Spain, the USA with Emma Hayes and the Matildas are very strong opponents. Then we also have France, Nigeria, Japan and Zambia who could surprise everyone this tournament. Olympic Canada Squad 2024 Warm Up Matches
The FIFA international window was between the 8th and 16th of July. In this period Canada played two friendly matches as a warm-up to the Olympics. The first match against Australia was won with 2-1. The Matilda’s scored the opener, but Canada pushed through and scored two goals of their own. The other friendly was against Nigeria behind closed doors. Canada won with 1-0.
Once they start the group stage the most difficult opponent will be France. The current number two only just lost to Spain in the Nations League and has the home advantage.
