Chelsea return to Stamford Bridge on Saturday looking to build on their emphatic 5-0 victory over Manchester United when they host newly-promoted Birmingham City in the Women’s Super League.
Sonia Bompastor’s side responded strongly after dropping two points against Aston Villa on the opening weekend, scoring five unanswered goals in Manchester. Birmingham, meanwhile, are still looking for their first victory since returning to the WSL but have already shown they can cause problems at this level.

Chelsea looking to build on Manchester United win
Chelsea’s opening two games have produced very different results. They dominated large periods of their season opener against Aston Villa but had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge. Against Manchester United, there was no such problem in front of goal.
Sjoeke Nüsken and Keira Walsh put Chelsea in control before half-time, with Lauren James, Ellie Carpenter and Lucy Bronze completing a 5-0 victory after the break.
The underlying numbers also show just how much control Chelsea have had during the opening weeks. Bompastor’s side have registered 60 shots across their first two league matches while facing only nine.
James has been particularly active. The England international has already scored twice in the WSL this season and has now either scored or assisted in six consecutive league appearances.
Bompastor used James centrally against Manchester United, with the Chelsea forward given freedom to drop deeper rather than operate as a traditional number nine. The movement around her helped Chelsea exploit the spaces behind United’s defence and could give Birmingham another difficult problem to solve.
Birmingham showing they can compete
Birmingham’s return to the WSL began with one of the most difficult fixtures possible against defending champions Manchester City. Amy Merricks’ side lost 3-1 but followed that performance with a 2-2 draw against Brighton.
There will also have been some frustration about how that point arrived. Goals from Océane Hurtré and Lily Crosthwaite put Birmingham 2-0 ahead before Brighton fought back late in the game.
It nevertheless showed that the promoted side can create chances at WSL level. The challenge at Stamford Bridge will be considerably different. Birmingham are likely to spend much longer without possession and will need to withstand a Chelsea side that has consistently forced opponents back during the opening two rounds.

What to expect
Chelsea should dominate possession and territory, but Birmingham’s opening two games suggest they will not simply arrive at Stamford Bridge hoping to survive.
Their ability to take a two-goal lead against Brighton should serve as a warning, particularly if Chelsea allow them opportunities to counter.
For Bompastor, the main challenge is turning control into goals as efficiently as Chelsea did against Manchester United. The Blues struggled to do that against Villa but were ruthless a week later.
With Arsenal coming next in the WSL, this is also an opportunity for Chelsea to avoid another early home slip and keep pace with Manchester City at the top of the table.
Birmingham have shown enough to suggest they can make periods of the game competitive, but containing Chelsea’s attacking movement for 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge is a much bigger test.
