Everton have given Karen Holmgaard a new one-year contract as the Denmark midfielder continues her rehabilitation from the anterior cruciate ligament injury she sustained in January.
The 27-year-old is not yet ready to return, but Everton have chosen to keep her within Scott Phelan’s squad while she completes a recovery that Holmgaard admits will still take time.
Her renewal is therefore built around what comes next. Holmgaard wants to play for Everton again, while the 2027 World Cup in Brazil provides a second target waiting at the end of her rehabilitation.

A Contract Signed During the Difficult Part

The midfielder has been through a demanding rehabilitation process before. She recovered from a hip injury in time for the 2025 European Championship and went on to make 11 Women’s Super League appearances for Everton in 2025-26.
Her contribution included an assist in the memorable 4-1 victory over Liverpool, but another serious injury interrupted her progress in January.

Karen Holmgaard becomes the third Everton player to extend her contract this summer, following captain Megan Finnigan and Aurora Galli.
Those renewals provide an element of continuity during a busy period of recruitment. Everton have added forwards Holly McNamara, Noémie Mouchon, Hannah Cain and Jutta Rantala, alongside attacker Zara Kramžar and defender Hannah Blundell.

Holmgaard has been with the club since August 2022, when she joined alongside her twin sister Sara. Her influence has continued during her absence, with Cox describing her as an important part of the squad and highlighting the support she has provided to teammates from the sidelines.
That leadership helps explain why Everton still see value in Holmgaard before she is able to contribute on the pitch again.
A Comeback With a World Cup Target
The length of Holmgaard’s new contract gives the coming season particular importance. Her immediate priority is completing her rehabilitation properly. She repeatedly stressed the need for patience and made clear that returning fit, comfortable and happy matters more than rushing back.
Beyond that comeback sits a place at the World Cup. Holmgaard has identified next summer’s tournament in Brazil as one of her main goals, although she recognises how much work remains before she can compete for selection.
Those two ambitions cannot be separated. Holmgaard must first return for Everton, rediscover her match fitness and show that she can contribute consistently before the World Cup becomes a realistic consideration. It gives her new contract a clear timeline without changing the order of her priorities.
One Year to Complete the Comeback
Karen Holmgaard’s renewal offers security during a difficult stage of her career, but it also creates an opportunity.
Everton retain a midfielder who has represented the club for four years and remained influential while injured. Holmgaard receives the time and environment needed to complete her recovery before attempting to reclaim her place.
The success of the agreement will not be determined on the day she signed it. It will be measured when Holmgaard finally pulls on the blue shirt again—and by how much of the season remains for her to pursue the World Cup place she is already dreaming about.
