Sara Agrež will join Liverpool FC Women on July 1 after the expiration of her contract with 1. FC Köln Women. The Slovenia international arrives after spending the last two-and-a-half seasons in the Frauen-Bundesliga. During that time she established herself as an important figure in Köln’s defensive structure.

During the 2025/26 campaign, Agrež started 23 of the club’s 26 league matches, highlighting her consistency and importance at the back. The left-footed centre-back brings significant international and top-level experience to Liverpool ahead of the 2026/27 Women’s Super League season.

Liverpool Continue Summer Rebuild

Liverpool FC Women are expected to undergo an important rebuild this summer following a difficult league campaign.

The Reds finished 11th in the Women’s Super League with 17 points from 22 matches, losing 13 league games throughout the season. The club struggled defensively at key moments and often found it difficult to maintain control in possession against stronger opposition.

With competition in the Women’s Super League continuing to increase, Liverpool are now looking to strengthen key areas of the squad ahead of next season. The arrival of Agrež represents a move toward adding tactical discipline, defensive organisation and composure in build-up play.

What Sara Agrež Brings to Liverpool

Agrež is regarded as a composed and intelligent modern centre-back. While she may not always stand out through aggressive defending or physical dominance. Instead, she stands out through her positioning, reliability and reading of the game.

Her defensive profile is built around:

  • strong anticipation,
  • intelligent positioning,
  • progressive passing,
  • calmness under pressure,
  • and timing in defensive duels.

One of her most valuable qualities is her comfort in possession. Sara Agrež is capable of stepping into midfield with the ball and progressing play through passing lines, something Liverpool have occasionally lacked against top WSL opponents.

As a naturally left-footed defender, she also offers better balance in Liverpool’s build-up structure from the left side of central defence.

Leadership and Experience

Despite still being in the prime years of her career, Agrež already brings substantial leadership experience. The Slovenian defender previously captained Turbine Potsdam at a young age and has earned extensive experience in the Frauen-Bundesliga as well as at international level with Slovenia.

Her experience across multiple tactical systems could prove valuable for a Liverpool side aiming to become more stable defensively.

How Liverpool Could Use Agrež

Liverpool would benefit from using Agrež in a structured defensive partnership. Her organisation and passing can help dictate play from deeper areas. She would fit naturally alongside more physical or aggressive defenders, allowing her to focus on: defensive coordination, build-up progression, and maintaining possession under pressure.

Her tactical intelligence and composure could also help Liverpool improve their ability to sustain attacks rather than relying heavily on transitional football.

A Signing Focused on Stability

The signing of Agrež signals Liverpool’s intention to strengthen the defensive foundation of the squad ahead of a crucial Women’s Super League campaign.

Liverpool are expected to reshape several areas of the squad this summer as the club looks to close the gap to the stronger sides in the Women’s Super League. However, one of the biggest questions surrounding the rebuild remains how much financial backing will be available to support those ambitions.

With competition across the WSL continuing to increase and rival clubs investing heavily in their squads, Liverpool’s activity during the transfer window could prove decisive in determining how quickly the club can move back toward the upper half of the table.
