Manchester United continue perfect cup start

Manchester United maintained their position at the top of the league-phase table with another emphatic victory. After opening their campaign by beating Sheffield United 10-1, United won 5-1 away to Durham to move onto six points from two matches.

Their numbers already stand out. United have scored 15 goals and conceded only twice, giving them a goal difference of +13 and putting them top ahead of the other teams with perfect records.

Liverpool also made it two wins from two, although their latest victory was considerably tighter. Gareth Taylor’s side came away from Birmingham City with a 4-3 win, taking their total to eight goals across their opening two matches.

Birmingham, meanwhile, remain without a point despite scoring three times. They have now conceded six goals across their first two fixtures.

Aston Villa and Crystal Palace maintain perfect records

Aston Villa responded to the departure of Natalia Arroyo with a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United under interim charge of Brian Sørensen. The result leaves Villa second with six points and a +4 goal difference after two matches.

Crystal Palace are level with them after beating Charlton Athletic 3-0. Palace have yet to concede in the competition, having also recorded a 1-0 victory over Watford in their opening match.

It has been a much more difficult start for Charlton. They have lost both matches without scoring, conceding seven in the process.

London City, West Ham and Tottenham strengthen their positions

London City Lionesses are another side with a perfect record after securing a narrow 1-0 victory away to Ipswich Town. They have now won both of their Subway Players Cup matches without conceding and sit fifth on six points.

West Ham are immediately behind them after beating Southampton 3-1 at Victoria Road. The Hammers began the competition by drawing 0-0 with Tottenham before winning the subsequent penalty shootout, and their latest victory takes them to five points.

Tottenham also moved up the standings with a 1-0 victory against Brighton. Spurs now have four points from two matches and sit seventh.

Brighton remain inside the qualification places despite the defeat. Their three points from the opening 4-0 win over Charlton currently put them eighth.

Subway Players Cup table begins to take shape

With the top eight teams progressing to the knockout stages, the early qualification picture is already becoming clearer.

Manchester United lead the competition, while Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Liverpool and London City have also taken maximum points. West Ham and Tottenham complete the group immediately behind them, with Brighton currently holding the eighth and final qualification position.

There is still plenty of football to be played, particularly with several teams having played only once or yet to begin their campaigns, so the current top eight is far from settled.

The next round of fixtures will therefore provide another important shift in the league-phase standings as the battle for the quarter-finals continues. The games will be on October 17, 18 and 21. This weekend the teams are back for the Women’s Super League.
