Ellen Wangerheim may leave Hammarby this summer. According to Amanda Zaza [Sportsbladet], the forward has attracted the interest from top clubs such as Chelsea, Wolfsburg, Manchester City and others. Wangerheim joined Hammarby at only 15 years old after excelling at youth level in clubs in Stockholm. This season, she played in six matches so far, scoring seven goals and registering two assists.

Hammarby tops the table

The club plays in the Swedish Damallsvenskan and has had a strong start to the season, winning five out of seven games and only losing once. The team has scored 19 goals already and Ellen Wangerheim directly contributed to nine of them.

Sportsbladet reports that Manchester City, Chelsea and Wolfsburg have inquired about the player. Her contract runs until 2026, but would she want to make the move after such a good start to the season? At only 20 years old, Wangerheim is performing at a high level, but competition for minutes at bigger clubs could hinder her development — regular playtime is vital for a player her age. Also, the WSL is a completely different league, very physical, and it often takes players a while to adjust.

Wolfsburg the most logical choice?

Wolfsburg may present the best option as at least ten players are expected to leave upon the expiration of their contract this summer, with most exits already confirmed. Among those leaving are Sveindis Jónsdóttir, Lynn Wilms, Jule Brand, Marina Hegering and Kathrin Hendrich. The Wolves already recruited a goalkeeper as Frohms, Borbe and Schmitz are all out the door.

Naturally, the club is looking for reinforcements to give their new head coach Stephan Lerch the best start possible and to challenge Bayern Munich for the title.

In contrast, both Manchester City’s and Chelsea’s front lines consist of only top-quality players, which could make breaking into the starting eleven a tough task for Wangerheim.
