Tottenham Hotspur Women have completed the signing of Dutch international defender Caitlin Dijkstra from VfL Wolfsburg on a long-term contract.
The 27-year-old becomes Spurs’ second major signing of the summer following the arrival of forward Shekiera Martinez, as the club continues to strengthen its squad ahead of the new Women’s Super League campaign.
Dijkstra arrives in north London with extensive experience at both domestic and European level, having represented Ajax, FC Twente and Wolfsburg during her career.
Caitlin Dijkstra’s Career Journey
Dijkstra began her professional career in the Netherlands before joining Ajax in 2018. During her debut season in Amsterdam, she made 15 appearances, including several outings in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
After establishing herself at Ajax over the following two seasons, the defender secured a move to FC Twente, where she quickly became a key figure in the starting line-up.
Her spell at Twente proved highly successful. Dijkstra helped the club secure the Eredivisie and Eredivisie Cup double during the 2021/22 season before adding further silverware the following campaign, including the KNVB Beker and KNVB Super Cup.
Her performances earned her a transfer to German giants VfL Wolfsburg in 2023. Following a temporary return to FC Twente on loan, Dijkstra eventually broke into Wolfsburg’s first-team plans during the 2024/25 season.
Although injuries delayed her debut, the Dutch defender returned to full fitness and showcased her quality in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.
What Caitlin Dijkstra Brings to Tottenham Hotspur Women
Dijkstra is regarded as a composed, ball-playing centre-back who is comfortable progressing possession from deep areas.
Her experience in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, combined with multiple league titles and domestic trophies in the Netherlands, adds valuable leadership and winning mentality to Tottenham’s defence.
At 27, she enters the squad at a crucial stage of her career and is expected to add stability, composure and tactical intelligence to Spurs’ backline. The signing also reflects Tottenham’s ambition to continue building on last season’s progress after finishing fifth in the Women’s Super League.
Caitlin Dijkstra Reacts to Tottenham Move
Speaking after completing her move to Spurs, Dijkstra expressed her excitement about joining the club.
“It feels amazing to join Spurs. I almost have no words for it. I’m a player who wants to achieve big things, and I’m ready for this challenge. I’m really grateful for the opportunity I have with this club.”
Tottenham Continue Squad Rebuild
Tottenham have moved quickly in the transfer market as they prepare for the new season. Head coach Martin Ho previously suggested that much of the club’s transfer business had already been planned early in the window, with Spurs targeting players capable of improving both quality and depth across the squad. The arrivals of Caitlin Dijkstra and Shekiera Martinez underline that strategy.
Martinez joined Tottenham following an impressive spell in the Women’s Super League and is expected to strengthen Spurs’ attacking options following the departure of Bethany England.
Meanwhile, midfielder Olga Ahtinen has extended her stay at the club, providing continuity and experience in the middle of the pitch. Despite those additions, Tottenham may still remain active in the market, with several departures already announced before the transfer window opens.
As Spurs continue reshaping their squad, the signing of Caitlin Dijkstra represents another statement of intent from a side aiming to establish itself among the Women’s Super League’s top teams.
