The Dutch international was top of the women’s football transfer news with her move to Manchester City. Her time at Arsenal came to an end after she and the club mutually agreed to part ways. Vivianne Miedema is ready for a new adventure and hopefully, she can leave her ACL injury far behind her. The 28-year-old is a world-class striker and the current record scorer in the Women’s Super League. She was welcomed with open arms by Manchester City.

Vivianne Miedema

The best free transfer

Many clubs tried to sign Vivianne Miedema. The football player was able to make a free women’s football transfer to any club she wanted. Multiple clubs from the WSL and other leagues showed interest. Miedema talked to a few and decided to stay in England. She is looking forward to the start of the season:

“I’ve had a difficult season and a half but, coming back into the national team camp over the summer, I really felt like me again. I found a new appreciation for football, and I’m really excited to start here. I hope my experience and qualities can help the team develop and help the girls around me. And I know I can still play football and I just want to show that on the pitch”, the Dutch forward said.

Wearing a legendary number

Vivianne Miedema will wear the number 6 from Steph Houston. She just retired from Manchester City after ten years. Her leaving Arsenal was taken hard by the fans, but the football player expected as much.

“I’ve been in the league for a long time and my gut feeling told me I really wanted to stay in England. I’ve spoken to multiple clubs in England and abroad, but when I started talking to City I got really excited. I want to challenge myself and I know this wasn’t the easy option”, Miedema explained.

“Having spent seven years at Arsenal, the easy voice in my head said, ‘Just go abroad and play for a team that can win the Champions League‘. I knew there were going to be mixed reactions to me joining City. I’m a very loyal person and player and I always make decisions based on the whole picture, not just football. I don’t ask people to understand it but I do ask people to respect it.”

Great competition in the attack line

Manchester City is not short of players in the front line. Bunny Shaw might still be injured by the start of the season. Shaw broke her foot last season. Miedema’s competition will mainly be Lauren Hemp, Shaw when returned and Chloe Kelly. However, she is not worried about this:

“I obviously spoke with Gareth over the last couple of months and I got a really good feeling from him,” said Miedema. “I started as a winger, then moved to No 9 and have recently been playing a lot as a No 10. I’m very versatile and I like complementing players around me. It’s not all about scoring goals.”

Setting new Challenges for herself

Becoming the record scorer of the WSL is an incredible achievement. Vivianne Miedema was in the best shape of her life those years. The forward is trying to get back to that and is setting new goals for herself: Surpassing Houghton’s goal total. “If we win a WSL title along the way, I think that would be the perfect legacy for me to leave”, the Dutch international added.

Hopefully, we see her kick off the season against Arsenal. Miedema is looking forward to getting it over with: “I already made a bet with Beth about it, that it was going to happen,” revealed Miedema. “It’s exciting. I’m happy to get it out of the way.”
