Manchester City remain the only team with a perfect record in the 2026/27 Women’s Super League after Matchweek 4, while Tottenham Hotspur continued their impressive start and Chelsea dealt another early blow to Arsenal’s title hopes.
City needed just one goal to beat newly promoted Charlton Athletic, while Tottenham put four past Aston Villa. Chelsea won the weekend’s headline fixture 1-0 against Arsenal, Liverpool took the Merseyside derby and Manchester United finally collected their first league victory of the season.
Elsewhere, London City Lionesses beat Brighton 2-0 and Birmingham City fought back late to draw 3-3 with Crystal Palace. Read it all in our WSL Matchweek 4 round-up.

WSL Matchweek 4 round-up
Charlton Athletic 0-1 Manchester City
Manchester City made it four wins from four, although newly promoted Charlton made the defending champions work hard for the points. Andrée Jeglertz rotated his team heavily, with Khadija Shaw and Lauren Hemp starting on the bench. City controlled possession but initially struggled to break through Charlton’s compact defence.
The breakthrough eventually came ten minutes before half-time. Grace Clinton won a free-kick around 25 yards from goal and Alex Greenwood curled a brilliant strike over the wall and into the bottom corner.
Charlton remained in the contest and Cassandra Korhonen had an opportunity to equalise after the break, but headed straight at Eartha Cumings. City finished with 19 attempts but could not find a second, with Greenwood’s free-kick proving enough to maintain their perfect WSL start.
London City Lionesses 2-0 Brighton
Alexia Putellas and Lucía Corrales scored as London City Lionesses secured a 2-0 victory over Brighton.
The opening half hour was relatively even before London City began increasing the pressure. Grace Geyoro forced Chiamaka Nnadozie into a save before a poor clearance from Gabby George was collected by Putellas, who shifted the ball onto her left foot and found the net.
Brighton nearly responded when Emily Murphy headed against the crossbar, with Kiko Seike dragging the rebound wide.
The visitors grew into the game during the second half but could not find an equaliser. London City eventually put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time when Daniëlle van de Donk released Cascarino, whose low cross was converted by Corrales at the far post.
Manchester United 2-1 West Ham United
Eva Olid collected her first WSL victory as Manchester United manager as her side edged West Ham 2-1. Elisabeth Terland opened the scoring after nine minutes, heading home Anna Sandberg’s corner. West Ham responded well and Kelly Gago had opportunities to equalise, but United took their advantage into the break.
Andrea Medina hit the crossbar shortly after the restart before eventually getting her goal in the 72nd minute, curling into the top corner after her initial effort was blocked.
Viviane Asseyi converted a stoppage-time penalty after Sandberg committed a foul inside the area, but United survived the final minutes to secure a much-needed first league victory of the season.
Birmingham City 3-3 Crystal Palace
Birmingham City and Crystal Palace produced the highest-scoring game of Matchweek 4 in a six-goal thriller. Océane Hurtré gave Birmingham the perfect start after just 40 seconds and restored their advantage with an excellent finish after Shanade Hopcroft had equalised for Palace.
Bethany England made it 2-2 after Sophie Baggaley tipped Sierra Enge’s effort onto the crossbar, before Lexi Lloyd-Smith capitalised on a Birmingham mistake to put Palace ahead for the first time.
The Eagles could not hold on. Suzu Amano struck in the 87th minute to rescue a 3-3 draw and a point for Birmingham.
Liverpool 2-0 Everton
Liverpool ended a run of five consecutive home Merseyside derby defeats with a deserved 2-0 victory over Everton at Anfield. Beata Olsson gave Liverpool the lead after only four minutes, getting ahead of Hannah Blundell to head home from a corner.
Everton improved after the break, but Liverpool continued to create the better opportunities. Vivien Endemann struck the crossbar, while Ruby Mace cleared Cornelia Kapocs’ header off the line.
Kapocs eventually got her goal in the 86th minute, turning inside the area before firing into the bottom corner to secure Liverpool’s second consecutive victory over Everton.
Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 Aston Villa
Tottenham maintained their unbeaten start with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Aston Villa. Spurs registered 35 attempts but were frustrated throughout the opening half before Victoria Pelova finally broke the deadlock in the 54th minute, converting Signe Gaupset’s low cross.
Pelova then combined with Drew Spence before firing in off the crossbar for her second of the afternoon. Caitlin Dijkstra headed home Julie Blakstad’s cross for Tottenham’s third before Cathinka Tandberg completed the scoring in the 88th minute.
Pelova has now scored four league goals this season, drawing level with Manchester City striker Khadija Shaw at the top of the early Golden Boot race. Tottenham remain unbeaten after four matches, while Aston Villa are still searching for their first victory.
Chelsea 1-0 Arsenal
Chelsea won the biggest game of the weekend as Alyssa Thompson’s first-half goal secured a 1-0 victory over Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. Arsenal saw plenty of the ball and registered 19 attempts, but their problems in front of goal continued. Only two of those efforts were on target.
Chelsea made their opportunities count. Anneke Borbe parried Keira Walsh’s powerful strike late in the first half, but Thompson reacted quickest and fired the rebound into the roof of the net.
Sonia Bompastor’s side were then able to defend their advantage after the break. Arsenal increased the pressure and made attacking changes but could not find a way through.
The result leaves Chelsea two points behind leaders Manchester City, while Arsenal already trail City by seven points after just four matches.
What did we learn from WSL Matchweek 4?
Manchester City continue to set the pace. Four games, four victories and a first clean sheet of the season leave the defending champions in control of the early title race.
Tottenham are emerging as one of the stories of the opening weeks. Their victory over Aston Villa extended their unbeaten WSL run to a club-record seven matches, while Pelova’s four goals have put her alongside Shaw at the top of the scoring chart.
Chelsea are also keeping close to City after three consecutive victories. Arsenal, meanwhile, have a much bigger problem. Their lack of cutting edge was evident again at Stamford Bridge, following similar struggles against Crystal Palace and HB Køge.
There was finally some relief for Manchester United with their first WSL victory under Olid, while Aston Villa and Charlton remain without a win after four rounds.
With Manchester City and Arsenal meeting next weekend, Matchweek 5 already presents another potentially significant moment in the early title race.
