London City Lionesses continued their strong start to the Women’s Super League season with a 2-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, as Alexia Putellas opened the scoring before Lucía Corrales sealed the three points in stoppage time.
The scoreline did not entirely reflect a competitive contest. Brighton had opportunities to equalise and finished with slightly more possession and a higher expected-goals figure, but London City were more effective when their opportunities arrived.
Putellas broke the deadlock after 29 minutes, scoring her first WSL goal, following a mistake in the Brighton defence, while Corrales finished a quick counter-attack in the second minute of stoppage time.

Quiet opening at London City
There was little between the sides during the opening stages, with neither able to create a significant chance in the first 15 minutes. Brighton’s first real threat came from a corner, but Vanegas headed over the crossbar. London City responded with two corners in quick succession without finding a breakthrough.
The hosts increasingly controlled possession as the first half developed, although Brighton did a good job of limiting their attacking threat. Kadidiatou Diani, in particular, was closely watched and struggled to find space.
Putellas puts London City ahead
Grace Geyoro tested Chiamaka Nnadozie with London’s first meaningful effort in the 28th minute. Nnadozie made the save, but Brighton failed to properly clear the danger.
Gabby George’s attempted clearance fell straight to Putellas, who took advantage immediately. The Spanish midfielder shifted the ball onto her left foot before finding the net to put London City 1-0 ahead in the 29th minute.
Brighton came extremely close to responding before the interval. A cross towards the far post found Emily Murphy, whose header struck the crossbar. The rebound dropped for Kiko Seike, but the Brighton forward dragged her effort narrowly wide.
It was Brighton’s best opportunity of the half, while London City continued to look the more likely side to add another goal before the break.
Brighton grow into the game
London City started the second half strongly, with Isa Kardinaal among those finding promising positions. Freya Godfrey then charged towards Nnadozie’s goal in the 56th minute, but George recovered well to make an important intervention and send the ball behind.
Brighton gradually began to gain momentum. They won another corner shortly after the hour and enjoyed better attacking spells than they had during much of the first half, although they were unable to turn their set-piece opportunities into an equaliser.
George was particularly important defensively for Brighton, while Vanegas did an excellent job of containing Diani throughout the second half.
London City head coach Arturo Ruiz continued urging his side on from the touchline as Brighton’s pressure increased. Goalscorer Putellas was withdrawn in the 73rd minute and replaced by María Pérez, while Brighton introduced Fran Peskett for Marisa Olislagers.
Corrales seals the win
London City had an opportunity to put the game beyond Brighton in the 83rd minute when Pérez played a good ball into the area for Daniëlle van de Donk, but the Dutch midfielder sent her effort wide.
With five minutes of additional time announced, Brighton still had an opportunity to rescue a point. They had already shown their ability to score late this season, including their stoppage-time equaliser against Birmingham City.
Instead, London City delivered the decisive second goal. Van de Donk released Estelle Cascarino down the right on a quick break. Cascarino sent a low cross towards the far post, where Corrales arrived to confidently finish in the 92nd minute. The goal secured a 2-0 victory in front of an attendance of 4,177.
London City make their chances count
The statistics underline how competitive the match was. Brighton had 52 per cent possession compared with London’s 48 and recorded an expected-goals total of 1.59 to the hosts’ 1.36. London City had 11 shots to Brighton’s 10, while the visitors registered three big chances compared with two for the hosts.
The major difference was finishing. Brighton were recorded as missing all three of their big chances, while London City ultimately found the goals they needed through Putellas and Corrales.
London City were also particularly effective in one-on-one situations. They won 55 per cent of the overall duels, 72 per cent of the aerial duels and completed nine of their 14 attempted dribbles.
Brighton had periods in which an equaliser looked possible, but London City defended those spells and were ultimately rewarded with Corrales’ late goal.
