The 2026/27 UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase is underway, with all 18 teams completing their opening fixtures across Tuesday and Wednesday.

OL Lyonnes produced the biggest result of Matchday 1 with an 8-0 victory over Servette, while defending champions Barcelona recovered from an early setback to beat Paris FC 5-2.

For the English clubs, Arsenal and Chelsea both started with narrow victories. Manchester City came from two goals down to draw 2-2 away at Bayern Munich, while Benfica secured one of the standout away results with a 2-1 victory at Juventus. Read our Women’s Champions League round-up here.

Women’s Champions League round-up

Bayern Munich 2-2 Manchester City

Manchester City recovered from a difficult first half to earn a point away at Bayern Munich. Giulia Gwinn opened the scoring before a Kerstin Casparij own goal doubled Bayern’s advantage. Beth Mead pulled one back shortly before half-time to give Manchester City a route back into the game.

Khadija Shaw then had a penalty saved by Ena Mahmutovic after the break, but City continued to improve and eventually found their equaliser through Carlotta Wamser in the 85th minute. It completed an impressive recovery after Bayern Munich had largely controlled the opening half.

Arsenal 1-0 HB Køge

Arsenal needed a stoppage-time penalty from Mariona Caldentey to avoid a frustrating goalless draw against HB Køge at Meadow Park. The Gunners dominated possession and registered 18 attempts by the 86th minute but once again struggled to turn their attacking play into goals.

Chloe Kelly thought she had given Arsenal an early lead, only for the goal to be disallowed because Stina Blackstenius was offside and judged to be interfering with goalkeeper Cecilie Vingum’s view.

HB Køge defended impressively and appeared set to earn a deserved point before Sakabe fouled Selina Cerci inside the area in stoppage time. Caldentey converted the resulting penalty to give Arsenal a 1-0 win after an otherwise poor attacking performance.

Inter 1-0 Häcken

Inter celebrated their first-ever Women’s Champions League league phase appearance with a victory over Häcken. Haley Bugeja scored the historic winner after only five minutes, finding the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Häcken had opportunities to respond, while Inter twice hit the crossbar in the second half through Elisa Bartoli and Lina Magull. Häcken goalkeeper Jennifer Falk was then sent off following a VAR review after bringing down Raphino late in the game, with Inter seeing out the remaining minutes to secure their first Champions League victory.

Juventus 1-2 Benfica

Benfica began their campaign with an impressive away victory over Juventus. Marit Bratberg Lund opened the scoring from the penalty spot five minutes before half-time and doubled Benfica’s advantage with a direct free-kick in the 61st minute.

Juventus had created opportunities of their own, with Alba Redondo hitting the woodwork early in the game. The Spanish forward eventually found the net in the 86th minute, but her late goal was not enough to prevent Juventus from opening the league phase with a defeat.

Real Madrid 1-1 Paris Saint-Germain

Real Madrid made an excellent start against Paris Saint-Germain when Schröder scored after just two minutes. Madrid had opportunities to extend their advantage, particularly through Schröder, who hit the woodwork during the second half and repeatedly threatened the PSG defence.

Those missed chances proved costly. Sakina Karchaoui converted a penalty in the 74th minute after Léa Morissaint was brought down by Maëlle Lakrar, allowing PSG to leave Madrid with a point.

OH Leuven 0-0 AS Roma

OH Leuven earned a point against AS Roma after a competitive goalless draw in Belgium. Roma controlled possession for long periods but struggled to turn that into clear opportunities. Leuven became increasingly dangerous after the break, forcing Roma goalkeeper Rachele Baldi into several important saves.

The biggest opportunity arrived at the other end in stoppage time when Roma were awarded a penalty. Substitute Marta Pandini stepped up but struck the post, leaving both teams with a point.

Jada Conijnenberg was named Player of the Match after providing a consistent attacking threat for the Belgian side.

Servette 0-8 OL Lyonnes

OL Lyonnes produced the most dominant performance of the opening round with an 8-0 victory away at Servette.

An own goal from Laia Ballesté started the scoring before Marie-Antoinette Katoto took control of the game. The France international scored twice before half-time and completed her hat-trick shortly after the restart.

Melchie Dumornay scored twice, while a second own goal and a late Ines Benyahia strike completed the rout. The eight-goal margin was the biggest victory since the Women’s Champions League introduced its league phase format.

Chelsea 1-0 Austria Wien

Chelsea collected three points at Plough Lane, although Austria Wien made Sonia Bompastor’s side work hard for them. Wieke Kaptein scored the only goal after 11 minutes with a powerful strike that bounced in off the underside of the crossbar.

Chelsea were unable to build on their early advantage and Austria Wien remained dangerous. Modesta Uka hit the post during the second half, while goalkeeper Livia Peng made several important saves to preserve Chelsea’s clean sheet.

There was also concern for Chelsea captain Keira Walsh, who was forced off after only 20 minutes.

Barcelona 5-2 Paris FC

Defending champions Barcelona recovered from conceding after just five minutes to make an emphatic start to their title defence.

Evelyne Viens gave Paris FC a surprise early lead, but Barcelona responded quickly. Kerolin scored her first goal for the club to equalise before Clara Serrajordi put Barça ahead.

Ewa Pajor and Caroline Graham Hansen extended the advantage before half-time, giving Barcelona a 4-1 lead.

Pajor added her second after the break before Clara Mateo pulled one back for Paris FC, completing a 5-2 victory for the defending European champions.

What’s next in the Women’s Champions League?

Matchday 2 follows quickly, with the next nine league phase fixtures taking place on Wednesday 30 September and Thursday 1 October. Arsenal travel to Paris FC, while Chelsea face a difficult away game against OL Lyonnes. Manchester City host Real Madrid the following evening.
