Brighton’s preparations for the new season have been disrupted by a late change in the dugout. Dario Vidošić left the club at the end of August, with Arturo Ruiz appointed as Brighton’s new head coach on a contract until 2029.
Ruiz arrives after working in Spain, most recently with Real Sociedad, and has had only a short period with his new squad before facing Arsenal.

Which Arsenal summer signings could start?
Rodríguez is now the obvious candidate in goal because of Van Domselaar’s rehabilitation. Ona Batlle is another strong candidate to make her WSL debut for Arsenal at left-back, while Georgia Stanway could immediately take a central midfield role.
Stanway’s arrival gives Slegers another experienced option alongside Kim Little, while Reuteler provides additional competition in a midfield that should allow Arsenal to rotate considerably over the course of the season.
There is even greater competition further forward. Alessia Russo remains the leading candidate through the middle, but Slegers can select from Olivia Smith, Mariona Caldentey, Caitlin Foord, Chloe Kelly, Stina Blackstenius and several of Arsenal’s summer additions around her.

There is little ambiguity about Arsenal’s objective this season. Slegers has openly stated that the Gunners are targeting the WSL title, a trophy Arsenal have not won since the 2018/19 campaign.
They came close last season but ultimately finished second, and the scale of the summer recruitment suggests Arsenal intend to give Slegers the depth required to sustain a title challenge across a longer league campaign.
An important part of that challenge will be starting well. Arsenal have discussed the slow starts that have hurt them in previous seasons, with Slegers confirming that the issue has been addressed by the coaching staff, captains and wider playing group.
That makes Sunday’s trip to Brighton particularly relevant. Three points would represent a straightforward start on paper, but recent meetings suggest the fixture may be considerably less comfortable than that.

The arrival of Ruiz adds another layer of uncertainty. Brighton may not yet be able to fully implement the new coach’s ideas, but that also makes it harder for Arsenal to know precisely what they will face at Broadfield Stadium.
Arsenal’s response to those changes during the match could therefore be as important as their initial game plan.
Lia Wälti faces her former club
One of the most interesting individual battles will come in midfield. Wälti spent seven years with Arsenal before leaving the club and subsequently joining Juventus. Her return to England with Brighton means she could face her former teammates immediately.

Arsenal should dominate possession for significant periods, but breaking Brighton down may require patience. Slegers expects the hosts to be capable of pressing aggressively before quickly becoming compact when defending deeper. Arsenal’s increased attacking variety should help.
Smith and Foord can threaten from wider areas, Caldentey can move between midfield and attack, while Russo gives Arsenal a focal point through the middle. Players such as Kelly, Blackstenius, Cerci and Reuteler also give Slegers ways to change the game from the bench.
Brighton’s threat could come when Arsenal commit players forward.
Seike provides pace and directness, Kirby can exploit space between midfield and defence and Wälti has the passing quality to start transitions from deeper positions.
The unknown is how much Ruiz will change after such limited preparation time. Brighton could resemble the side Arsenal struggled to break down last season, or their new coach could immediately introduce different ideas.
That unpredictability makes this a useful opening examination of an Arsenal squad expected to challenge for the title.
