Real Madrid have promoted 18-year-old midfielder Irune Dorado to their first-team squad for the 2026/27 season and extended her contract until 30 June 2029.
Although this is her formal promotion from the academy, Irune has already made 36 competitive appearances for the senior team. She also enters the season after captaining Spain to the 2026 Women’s Under-19 European Championship and scoring the only goal in the final against Germany.
The announcement therefore confirms her permanent first-team status rather than marking the beginning of her involvement at senior level.
Irune was already part of the first-team rotation
Irune Dorado joined Real Madrid in 2021 and represented every level of the club’s academy. She won league titles with both the Cadete and Juvenil teams before making her senior debut in January 2025.
She played ten first-team matches during the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign. Her involvement increased significantly under Pau Quesada in 2025/26. Irune made 26 appearances, including 12 starts, and accumulated 1,302 minutes across the season. She also registered one assist.
That gave her 36 official appearances before being formally added to the first-team squad. Those figures distinguish this promotion from a conventional move out of academy football. Real Madrid already have evidence of how Irune performs in Liga F and senior cup competitions.
Three European titles with Spain
Irune’s international record provides further context for the club’s decision. She was part of the Spain team that won the 2024 Women’s Under-17 European Championship before stepping up to under-19 level. Spain then won consecutive Under-19 European titles in 2025 and 2026.
Irune Dorado scored in extra time against Italy in the 2025 semi-final and started the 4-0 final victory over France.
Her role grew further in 2026. She captained Spain and scored the winning goal in their 1-0 final victory over Germany, meeting Rosalía Domínguez’s corner in the 60th minute. The result gave Spain a record fifth consecutive Under-19 European title.
She has consequently won three UEFA youth championships in three years:
- 2024: Women’s Under-17 European Championship
- 2025: Women’s Under-19 European Championship
- 2026: Women’s Under-19 European Championship as captain and final goalscorer
Competition for midfield minutes remains strong
Irune’s promotion comes during a considerable rebuild of Real Madrid’s midfield. The club have signed Arianna Caruso, Elisa Senß and Andreia Jacinto on contracts until 2030 following the departures of Caroline Weir and Teresa Abelleira. Irune will therefore compete with several senior internationals for playing time.
Her 26 appearances last season indicate that she can still have a meaningful role without starting every match. She provides Quesada with an academy-trained option who already understands the team and can be used across a long domestic and European schedule.
Irune Dorado is also one of four academy players promoted by Real Madrid this summer, alongside Laia López, Noe Bejarano and Silvia Cristóbal. The decisions add internal development to a transfer window otherwise dominated by external midfield recruitment.
The contract until 2029 gives Real Madrid three seasons to determine how far Irune can progress from rotation player to regular starter. Unlike many newly promoted academy players, she begins that period with 36 senior appearances already completed.
