Aston Villa Women have continued their focus on emerging talent by completing the signing of Norwegian midfielder Kamilla Melgård from Spanish side Madrid CFF, subject to visa approval.
The 20-year-old becomes Villa’s latest addition during a summer that is increasingly revealing the club’s long-term recruitment strategy. Following the arrival of Scotland international Mia McAulay earlier in the transfer window, Villa are once again investing in a player with significant potential rather than opting for an established star.
Transfer Snapshot
Player: Kamilla Melgård
Age: 20
Position: Midfielder
From: Madrid CFF
To: Aston Villa
Transfer Type: Permanent
International: Norway U23
Who Is Kamilla Melgård?
Although still only 20, Melgård already has experience across two of Europe’s strongest leagues. She made her senior debut for Lyn Fotball at just 15 years old and went on to make more than 60 appearances in Norway’s Toppserien before earning a move to Spain with Madrid CFF in 2024.
The transition to Liga F proved to be an important step in her development. During her first season in Spain, Melgård contributed four goals and seven assists, establishing herself as a creative and versatile midfielder capable of operating in several attacking roles.
Internationally, she has represented Norway throughout the youth age groups and is currently part of the country’s Under-23 setup.
Why Villa Wanted Her
Melgård offers the type of profile that is becoming increasingly valuable in the modern Women’s Super League.
Comfortable both in central midfield and advanced attacking positions, she combines technical quality with an eye for goal and creativity in the final third. Her ability to influence matches in multiple areas of the pitch gives Aston Villa greater tactical flexibility as they continue shaping the squad for the new campaign.
Director of Women’s Football Marisa Ewers described the Norwegian as “an exciting young player with huge potential,” highlighting the club’s belief that her best years are still ahead of her.
For Melgård, the attraction was equally clear. Speaking after completing the move, she pointed to Aston Villa’s facilities and the opportunity to continue developing in one of the world’s most competitive leagues.
A Clear Recruitment Strategy Is Emerging
Melgård’s arrival follows the signing of highly-rated Scotland winger Mia McAulay from Rangers, another player who joined Villa with an outstanding reputation despite her young age.
Viewed together, the two transfers suggest Aston Villa are placing increasing emphasis on recruiting players entering the early stages of their careers rather than relying solely on established internationals. That approach comes after a summer of significant departures.
Kirsty Hanson has joined Tottenham Hotspur, while Ebony Salmon, Gabi Nunes and Sabrina D’Angelo have all left the club. Villa also bid emotional farewells to Paula Tomás and Lucy Staniforth following their retirements from professional football. The departures have created space for a new generation of players to establish themselves.
Why This Transfer Matters
Not every important signing arrives with global recognition. Sometimes the smartest recruitment comes from identifying players before they become household names.
Kamilla Melgård has already shown she can adapt successfully to different leagues, progressing from Norway to Spain before earning a move to England at just 20 years old.
For Aston Villa, she represents another investment in the future. Alongside McAulay, her arrival reinforces the impression that the club is building a squad capable of growing together over the coming seasons rather than chasing short-term solutions.
If that strategy proves successful, these may be the signings that define Villa’s next chapter.
