Liverpool’s summer transfer business is beginning to reveal a clear direction. After strengthening the spine of the squad with defender Sara Agrež and adding attacking quality through Vivien Endemann, the Reds have now turned their attention to one of England’s brightest upcoming full-backs. Young, versatile and already experienced despite her age, Ward joins Anfield with the potential to become an important player for years to come.

Age: 20
Position: Full-back
From: Bristol City
To: Liverpool
Transfer: Free transfer
Contract: Permanent

Who Is Mari Ward?

Despite being only 20 years old, Ward already arrives with considerable senior experience. Since joining Bristol City from Plymouth Argyle in 2022, she has made 86 appearances, scored six goals and played a key role in helping the Robins win promotion to the Women’s Super League in 2022/23.

She followed that success by gaining valuable top-flight experience, making 21 WSL appearances during Bristol City’s 2023/24 campaign before becoming one of the Championship’s most consistent defenders last season. Ward started 21 of Bristol City’s 22 league matches as the club finished fourth, underlining both her reliability and importance.

Her performances have also been recognised internationally. After progressing through England’s youth teams at Under-17, Under-19 and Under-20 level, she made her England Under-23 debut in October 2025.

A Versatile Option for Gareth Taylor

One of Ward’s biggest strengths is her flexibility. Although she featured predominantly at left-back last season, she is equally comfortable operating on the right, giving Liverpool valuable depth across both full-back positions. That versatility is increasingly valuable in the modern game, where injuries and tactical adjustments often require defenders capable of playing multiple roles.

Ward also offers plenty going forward. Comfortable carrying the ball and supporting attacks from wide areas, she has already shown she can contribute in possession while continuing to develop defensively.

Liverpool’s Recruitment Plan Is Becoming Clear

Viewed on its own, Ward’s signing looks like another promising addition. Viewed alongside Liverpool’s other business this summer, a much clearer picture begins to emerge.

Sara Agrež brings Bundesliga experience and leadership to central defence. Vivien Endemann adds proven attacking quality from the Frauen-Bundesliga. Ward, meanwhile, represents an investment in one of England’s most promising young defenders.

Rather than focusing solely on established stars, Liverpool appear to be building a squad that combines immediate quality with long-term development. That approach makes sense after a disappointing 2025/26 campaign in which the Reds finished 11th in the Women’s Super League and conceded too many goals at crucial moments.

Adding younger players with room to improve gives the club the opportunity to strengthen both now and in the seasons ahead.

Why This Transfer Matters

Ward is unlikely to arrive expecting to become an automatic starter from day one. Instead, Liverpool have secured a player who already possesses almost 90 senior appearances while still having significant room for development.

Those are increasingly the types of signings successful clubs look to make before a player’s value rises even further.

If Ward continues the progression she has shown at Bristol City and with England’s youth teams, Liverpool may have secured one of the Women’s Super League’s most promising young full-backs without paying a transfer fee.

As the Reds continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new season, Mari Ward’s arrival is another indication that Liverpool are planning not just for the next campaign, but for the future.
