Real Madrid Femenino have officially announced the departures of two of the most influential players in the club’s recent history, Caroline Weir and Teresa Abelleira, marking the end of a significant chapter for the Spanish giants.

The exits of the Scotland international and the Spain World Cup winner represent a major moment in Real Madrid’s evolution as the club prepares for the 2026/27 season.

Caroline Weir Leaves Real Madrid After Record-Breaking Spell

Real Madrid confirmed that Caroline Weir has decided to bring her four-year spell at the club to an end, concluding one of the most successful individual careers in the history of the women’s team.

Since arriving in Madrid in 2022, Weir established herself as one of the most important figures in the squad. Across 125 appearances, the attacking midfielder scored 63 goals and became the club’s all-time leading goalscorer and assist provider.

Her creativity, leadership and ability to deliver in decisive moments helped Real Madrid continue their growth as one of Europe’s emerging forces in women’s football.

In an official statement, the club thanked Weir for her professionalism, commitment and contribution throughout her time in Madrid:

“Real Madrid wishes to express its gratitude and affection for everything she has contributed to our club and for her professionalism, commitment and work during these four seasons.”

The Scottish playmaker leaves behind a remarkable legacy and will be remembered as one of the defining players of Real Madrid Femenino’s modern era.

Teresa Abelleira Ends Six-Year Journey with Real Madrid

Alongside Weir’s departure, Real Madrid also announced that Teresa Abelleira’s time at the club has come to an end after six seasons in the Spanish capital.

Abelleira was one of the cornerstone figures in the team’s development and played a vital role in establishing Real Madrid as a consistent contender in both domestic and European competitions.

During her six-year spell, the midfielder made 170 appearances and scored 13 goals while earning widespread recognition as one of Spain’s most technically gifted midfielders.

Her achievements extended beyond club football. Abelleira was part of the Spain squad that won the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023 before helping La Roja secure the UEFA Women’s Nations League title in 2024.

Real Madrid praised the midfielder for embodying the club’s values throughout her time at the club and thanked her for her service. The club stated that Abelleira had always represented the values of Real Madrid during the six seasons she wore the famous white shirt.

Two Club Icons Depart as Real Madrid Prepare for Change

The departures of Weir and Abelleira leave significant gaps both on and off the pitch.

Weir’s attacking output and match-winning quality made her one of the most productive players in European women’s football, while Abelleira’s intelligence, passing range and leadership were central to Real Madrid’s midfield structure for years.

Together, they played a crucial role in the continued rise of Real Madrid Femenino, helping the club establish itself among Spain’s elite and become a regular presence in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

While the club has not yet confirmed their next destinations, both players leave Madrid with their reputations enhanced and their places firmly secured in the club’s history.

As Real Madrid enter a new phase, replacing two players of such influence will be one of the biggest challenges facing the club during the summer transfer window.

For supporters, however, the legacy of Caroline Weir and Teresa Abelleira is already assured. Their contributions helped shape the identity of Real Madrid Femenino and laid foundations that will continue to benefit the club for years to come.
